Janak holds a DPhil (Ph.D.) from the University of Oxford where he was a Rotary Scholar in the School of Geography and the Environment. His doctoral studies focused on ways in which Afghan refugees live livable lives despite the precarity of their refugee status in New Delhi, India. Through a de-colonial lens, he collaborated with The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and implementing partners on their Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in South Asia to unlock economic, social, and educational opportunities across four refugee communities. Janak grew up in an immigrant household in Denver and the suburbs of Philadelphia and has lived, researched, and worked across 4 continents. In particular, he is excited in thinking about ways a sociotechnical perspective on deep technology and AI for Good space can better address societal impact, policy, public interest, and technical developments. Janak received his undergraduate training at Wake Forest University in Sociology (Honors) modified by Environmental Science and Politics & International Affairs and also a Master's from Dartmouth College in Globalization Studies as an NIH-Fogarty Global Health Fellow.
