Meet Our Team
We are assembling a team with a diverse range of skills and experience, guided by the ethos of service for others. Univie was conceived during a WHO & Ichilov Hackathon where then Cornell Tech Students, Fabio Nate, Yasmin, and Eddie participated. The concept was revived as the team saw the increased need for such technology during the pandemic and future health crises.
Fabio Daiber
CEO
Fabio is currently a Software Program Manager for Fire Tablets at Amazon's Lab126. Previously, he was a Senior Consultant at Capgemini Invent. He brings 5 years of experience with digital products and business transformation to Univie. During his time at Cornell Tech, Fabio worked on the idea of Univie in a WHO hackathon. Fabio received an MBA from Cornell Tech and B.S. from North Carolina State and Reutlingen University.
Nathanael Ngbondo Koweda
CTO
With 7 years of experience building software at Microsoft, Nate brings a strong technical expertise to univie. He is the co-founder and CTO of Tangle, a remote work solution that leverages natural language understanding to facilitate communication between co-workers. He was introduced to helping vulnerable populations including refugees at a young age and has volunteered for numerous organizations over the years. Nate holds a Tech MBA from Cornell University, an MS from University of Oklahoma and an MEng from Blaise Pascal University (Clermont-Ferrand).
Eddie Mele
COO
Eddie brings 6 years of digital marketing and audience development to univie. While not working on univie, he is the Co-Founder and CEO of Croo, a content creation and collaboration platform for video game live streamers. Prior to Croo, he worked in Audience Development and Marketing at WebMD for over 4 years. While working for WebMD he was an advocate for intrapreneurship creating initiatives that grew their Instagram engagement 110% YoY and developing products like the WebMD Health Now podcast and an SMS based tool for lowering US maternal mortality and morbidity rates. For his work he was nominated for 3 Webby awards, winning the Social Team Award in 2016. Eddie holds a Tech MBA from Cornell University, and a BA from Boston College.
Professor Pinchas “Pinny” Halpern M.D.
Head of Medical Affairs
Pinchas ("Pinny") Halpern, M.D. has over 25 years of medical experience and has served as chair of Tel Aviv Medical Center’s Emergency Medical Division. He brings extensive domain expertise to univie having led training missions in Emergency and Disaster Medicine to Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Jordan, Poland, and the USA and participated in disaster relief efforts in the Turkey earthquake. Pinny is currently Clinical Associate Professor in Anesthesia, Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Eastern Piedmont, Italy and the Free University of Brussels, Belgium and staff member of the European Master of Disaster Medicine.
Dr. Dorit Nitzan
Mentor
Dr. Nitzan serves as the WHO Regional Emergency Director for the WHO European Region where she leads and oversees the WHO full emergency management cycle, from prevention and preparedness and from response and recovery. She has been with WHO since 2005.
Prior to her time at the WHO, Dr. Nitzan was in senior management positions in the Israeli Ministry of Health. She was also active in the non-governmental organization Physicians for Human Rights. She supported humanitarian operations in Ethiopia and the Middle East with the World Food Programme, and participated in missions supporting nutrition, food safety, public health and emergency response in China, the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation. She led health sector activities in disaster preparedness and response missions to Africa, Asia and South America, and served in the search and rescue operations response to the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.
Dr. Nitzan is a trained paediatrician. She graduated from the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in Israel. She completed her pediatric residency, fellowship and Master of Public Health degree at the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Children’s Hospital in New York City, United States of America. Prior to this, she graduated as a registered dietitian from Hebrew University in Israel.
Janak Padhiar
Head of Product
Janak holds a DPhil (Ph.D.) from the University of Oxford where he was a Rotary Scholar in the School of Geography and the Environment. His doctoral studies focused on ways in which Afghan refugees live livable lives despite the precarity of their refugee status in New Delhi, India. Through a de-colonial lens, he collaborated with The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and implementing partners on their Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in South Asia to unlock economic, social, and educational opportunities across four refugee communities. Janak grew up in an immigrant household in Denver and the suburbs of Philadelphia and has lived, researched, and worked across 4 continents. In particular, he is excited in thinking about ways a sociotechnical perspective on deep technology and AI for Good space can better address societal impact, policy, public interest, and technical developments. Janak received his undergraduate training at Wake Forest University in Sociology (Honors) modified by Environmental Science and Politics & International Affairs and also a Master's from Dartmouth College in Globalization Studies as an NIH-Fogarty Global Health Fellow.
Tamar Many
Head of Strategic Partnerships
Tamar Many’s work is aligned with the ultimate goals of design: to deliver a spark of imagination, to stir emotions and to challenge perceptions.
Together with her students and in cross-disciplinary international collaborations, she tests the boundaries of design, technology and business, kaleidoscoping the fields as they intersect. Her guiding ethos is that talent-infused situations will always produce something good. In her teaching role, she has developed curricula and led multidisciplinary design courses in Visual Communications, Fashion Design, Textile Design, Environmental Design, Industrial Design and Experimental Lab.
Shani Brusilovsky
Head of Design
Shani designs products & services, and is excited about the integration of design, technology and social impact. She’s the head of design at Diagnostic Robotics, they create AI based products for healthcare. Previously she was a product designer at MobileODT a medical device startup focused on women’s health.
Yasmin Lalani
CMO
Yasmin has 10 years of experience working in the international social impact sector. She is currently Senior Director at The Partnership Fund for New York City, an economic development non-profit, where she helps to run its Fintech Innovation Lab. Previously, she has worked for an India-based impact investing fund, an international development think tank, and an early stage fintech startup/B Corp that worked to address global access to credit and financial inclusion. Yasmin has an MBA from Cornell University and a BA from the George Washington University.
Rony Fliegman
Product Design
Rony is a Visual Communication graduate from Shenkar College, specializing in Product Design. She has extensive experience in working with emerging startup organizations. currently working as a product designer at WIX.com
Ahmad Salah
Sr. Back-End Developer
Ahmad is a refugee himself, he moved from Syria to Germany in 2016. After learning the German language, he received a scholarship to study at Reutlingen University, where he will graduate with a B.S. in Computer Science in 2022. In his free time, Ahmad volunteers as a radio presenter for a refugee radio program and created a photo exhibition in Germany about the war in Syria.
Awaan Aadil
GTM Lead
Awaan brings 6 years of experience in global roles, covering Channel Transformation, Go-to-Market Strategy, and Business Development in the consumer goods and telecommunications industry across Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and India. Awaan holds a Master’s in Applied Economics from Cornell University and a B.S in Business Administration from the University of Bath.
Chukwuma Okoroafor
Legal Counsel
Chukwuma is currently the Head of Legal at Helium Health, with 9 years experience in corporate/commercial law, technology transactions, emerging and high growth companies, product counselling, and impact investing. He has worked on tech ecosystem projects with Mastercard, Cooley LLP, and Gunderson Dettmer. Chukwuma obtained his LL.B from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi - Ghana and holds a Masters of Law (LL.M.) degree in Law, Technology and Entrepreneurship from the Cornell Law School. Also, he is a Chartered Arbitrator qualified by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK (CiARB UK) and a member of the World Economic Forum, Global Shapers Community.
